INTERMODALISM
- The system of coordinating different modes of transportation
- other simple meaning is, the system of changes mode of transportation. normally, involve two or more mode of transportation.
1) SECURITY
First, the cargo is in a container, which makes it harder to get into. Second, containers are only identified by a serial number on the outside. This gives enormous protection because the only way to know what is in a container is to open it up or know the serial number. Finally, containers have seals put on the latches. While this will not prevent a break in, it is very obvious that there has been a break-in.
2) SAFETY
closely related to security, containerized cargo is usually safer than any other type of container. The metal boxes are extremely strong, and almost impossible to crush.
3) Efficiency
First, because each container is of standard dimensions, specialized handling equipment is designed just for them. Second, because each container is the same, no time wasted making adjustments. Third, given that one can now design a single, most efficient container, the boxes were made of such a size that they are much bigger than the boxes before.
4) SPEED
if the cargo can be handled quicker, more cargo can move through one port in a given amount of time.
